Zong lets Android developers integrate one-click payment into apps

The company will be working closely with Android developers to help them incorporate the feature into their applications in such a way that will help them recognize greater potential revenue than is currently possible. Developers will be able to offer Android users an easy way to make in-application payments – just a click of a button verifies the user, begins the transaction and completes the purchase.

“With Android handset sales exceeding those of iPhone, Zong expects the Android market to dominate,” said Hill Ferguson, vice president of product and marketing at Zong, Menlo Park, CA. “By providing an easy to use payment system, Zong will help fuel application development on this growing platform.”

Zong is the mobile payment provider for Facebook Credits and also works with destination sites such as Gaia Online, IMVU and Playdom. It claims its payment experience converts shoppers into buyers at rates up to 10 times greater than traditional payment methods.

Android handset sales have exceeded previous leader iPhone in the United States, reports The NPD Group. IPhone applications accounted for 99.4 percent of mobile application downloads in 2009 according to Gartner.

Many developers have cited a lack of payment options as one of the major barriers to development and revenue generation on Android.

Developers have customarily focused on the iPhone because it has been difficult to monetize applications on Android.

But now with more than 100,000 new Android handsets activated daily, the market opportunity is growing rapidly and with an easy payment tool, developers will now be able to easily generate revenue from that market.

Approved Android developers will be able to download the Zong Android SDK for easy integration of in-application payments.

Zong will work with participating developers to ensure that the software is integrated in a way that optimizes the user experience and meets the developer’s needs.

“Users will appreciate the simplicity of Zong payment – with just a click of a button, they can make purchases within an Android application without having to register or log-in for anything,” Mr. Ferguson said. “This ease of use translates to more potential revenue for Android developers.

“In the end, users will have more premium applications, features and functionality by having access to higher-value applications,” he said. “With the option in place, we expect significant growth for Android application development, Android revenue realization and mobile payments usage.”
