PayPal boosts mobile check transfer with Android upgrade after iPhone response

Android users nationwide can now add money from their checks by taking a photo of the document. The money gets added to their PayPal account, with the ability to let users store the app on Android’s removable SD card.

“On average, about a million dollars per month have been uploaded since we launched mobile check capture on the iPhone,” said Shimone Samuel, product experience manager for PayPal Mobile, in a blogpost.

“That’s a lot of people skipping the ATM, depositing a check with their phone and not paying any fees for the privilege,” he said.

Here is Mr. Samuel’s entire blogpost:

PayPal’s New Android App Lets You Transfer Checks by Snapping a Photo
Hi, Shimone Samuel here, Product Experience Manager for PayPal Mobile. Following last week’s news that PayPal is the most trusted brand in mobile payments, I’m excited to announce the newest version of our Android app, which includes a couple new features such as the ability to add money from checks in the US and store your application on Android’s removable SD card.

The ability to add money from checks was added to the PayPal app for iPhone back in October of 2010, and it’s been a big hit. On average, about a million dollars per month have been uploaded since we launched mobile check capture on the iPhone. That’s a lot of people skipping the ATM, depositing a check with their phone and not paying any fees for the privilege. Reading through your comments from our iPhone Announcement, I see “Android, Android, Android, Android.” It’s true, new features often come out on the iPhone first, but that’s only because the iPhone has been around longer. Rest assured, new PayPal features for Android won’t be far behind!

From a personal perspective I love the check transfer feature, I use an online-only bank and until this feature was added my only option was to mail checks for deposit. Now I snap a picture and add them directly to PayPal. I can leave the balance in my PayPal account or withdraw it to my bank.

The other new feature I’d like to highlight is support for “Move to SD card” on devices running Android 2.2+. I spend a lot of time reading through our app reviews and want you to know we’re not just working on our own wish list, but on yours as well. We’re listening to all of your comments and are always working to get all iPhone features added to Android, along with some top-secret Android-only features, bug fixes, top customer requests and more.

Stay tuned for more to come, and download the new PayPal app for Android on the Android Marketplace – we’d love to know what you think.
