Gas retailer ExxonMobil is streamlining purchases at the pump with a new mobile application, allowing customers to pay from a smartphone using various methods, including Apple Pay.

Customers at select stations will have the ability to control their fill up experience through their smartphones, which also allows them to directly pay with any major credit or Apple Pay within the platform. The retailer is hoping to speed up the checkout process at locations while providing customers with a more convenient experience on mobile with features such as payment, feedback, directions, receipts, transaction history and ordering capabilities.

“ExxonMobil is always looking for ways to better serve its customers through innovative technology,” said Ashley Smith Alemayehu, media advisor at Exxon Mobil Corporation. “We are proud to accept Apple Pay now from within our Speedpass+ app, which makes paying for fuel and car washes at the pump quick and convenient.”

The new ExxonMobil Speedpass app is available for free on both Android and Apple devices. Customers can manage their entire transaction directly through the app, which eliminates extra time at the pump.

Customers at certain gas stations can open the Speedpass app once stopped and located at a specific pump within the retail location. The user must select which number pump they are located at and which car wash option they would like, if any.

The app will summarize the purchase, where users can authorize the transaction and then fill up their vehicles. Users will receive a virtual receipt within the app, but can also get one through the machine or via email.

Those who purchase with Apple Pay will only need to hold their thumbprint to their iPhones for authorization.

Speedpass will keep a registry of the specific users’ transaction history for consumers interested in tracking expenses. The app will generate which nearby gas stations accept the mobile payment experience, and provide directions.

Currently, the app experience is available at 6,000 locations in the U.S., but will likely expand to 8,000 stores by mid-year.

In addition to Apple Pay, users can pay with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and ExxonMobil cards through the app.

Chase worked on plans to bring its Chase Pay mobile payments solution to gas stations and convenience stores in an attempt to corner a sector known for the kind of everyday purchases that fit well with mobile (see more).

Citgo customers in Southern Illinois and Indiana who downloaded a mobile app received thousands of dollars in gift cards as part of a free-gas giveaway (see more).

“Our goal is to provide consumers a variety of choices in how to pay for fuel at the pump,” Ms. Alemayehu said.
