October 12, 2012

SAN DIEGO – A SAP executive at the MobileCon conference said that mobile commerce is changing the way retailers drive sales and the medium is going to continue be a significant part of consumers’ day-to-day lives.

During the “Power Learning” keynote session, the executive addressed the growing trends in mobile and the different channels companies are using to engage new and existing customers. The executive also believes that mobile commerce is not only a key part of the future, but it will continue to make a big impact.

“Mobile commerce is going to become a more significant part of this world,” said Sanjay Poonen, president of technology and innovations at SAP.

“Right now, many retailers are looking at ways to equip their store associates with mobile devices.”

Big demand
According to Mr. Poonen, there is an increasing demand for mobile commerce.

Many marketers are looking at different ways to implement the technology into the core of their strategies to drive sales, innovation and consumer engagement.

The mobile commerce space is growing at an exponential pace. And, technologies such as near-field-communication and the mobile wallet helped pave the way.

Companies including ISIS, Apple and Google are testing out new technologies to encourage consumers to pay for goods and services using their mobile devices.

Furthermore, retailers such as JCPenney have vowed to get rid of traditional point-of-sale mechanisms such as cashiers and replace them with mobile.

This is where the space is heading and marketers need to sit up and take notice, per Mr. Poonen.

Currently, SAP is working with several telecomunnications companies to further its stance in the mobile commerce space.

Additionally, the company has partnered with Telefonica to bolster the future of the mobile wallet.

“Mobile is transforming our lives,” Mr. Poonen said. “The fact of the matter is, is that it’s happening as we speak today.

“Mobility is a key part of our life and we have to look forward.
