Movietickets.com, AT&T look to entice customers to purchase digital tickets

Movietickets.com and AT&T’s Ticket Twosdays program is tapping into theater chain Cinemark to extend mobile ticketing to even more customers, enticing them with rewards for mobile purchases.

Under this partnership, the brand is now giving out an extra movie ticket to customers to purchase one. Now that it has expanded its coverage to even more theaters, mobile users have even more of an incentive to purchase more tickets.

“We’re welcoming millions of customers to our Ticket Twosdays program,” said Jay Cary, vice president of customer loyalty and retention, AT&T Entertainment Group.

Ticket Twosdays
For ISPs like AT&T, who all offer relatively similar coverage plans and other services, attracting new customers becomes more about the ways that they can stand out rather than the ways they are similar to competitors.

One of the best ways for them to stand out from the competitors is through unique perks outside of the standard services they provide.

AT&T already has one that is quite popular with customers in the form of its Ticket Twosdays weekly event.

For AT&T customers, if they purchase a movie ticket for a showing at one of the participating theater chains, AT&T will give them a second ticket free.

This event happens every Tuesday and is coordinated in partnership with movietickets.com through its Web site and mobile app.

The deal already covers AMC and Regal Entertainment, two of the biggest theater chains in the country, but now with the addition of Cinemark, AT&T can offer a diverse range of theaters for customers to take advantage of this deal through.

A second ticket is available by visiting a special mobile-optimized Web site powered by AT&T and entering an AT&T wireless number or the online login for an account.

Movietickets.com provides the undergirding platform for purchasing the tickets.

Mobile ticekting
By partnering with movietickets.com and encouraging consumers to purchase these tickets through a mobile channel, AT&T is tapping into the lucrative mobile market as more and more consumers are turning to mobile as their primary form of digital interaction.

In addition, movie ticketing is one of the hottest areas for mobile transactions. Partially, this is because movie tickets purchased on a mobile device can usually be easily transferred to a mobile wallet or other digital pass library app to be shown at the theater later.

This is why companies such as Atom Tickets have seen such success as they continue to expand their mobile coverage of ticketing services (see story).

Outside of the theater, some companies have seen success from taking the digital media purchasing into people’s homes such as the move Fandango recently took by letting consumers rent or purchase films through their mobile devices and watch them on their TVs at home (see story).

AT&T is hoping to capitalize on the popularity of mobile movie ticketing as a way of standing out form their competitors in the ISP industry.

“We know our customers want effortless entertainment experiences – that’s why we’re increasing our Ticket Twosdays footprint by more than 25%. Now it’s easier to enjoy a movie on us,” Mr. Cary said.
