LivingSocial taps augmented reality mobile app for scavenger hunt competition

The company is working with GoldRun on the mobile initiative. The scavenger hunts will take place in three West Coast cities through August.

GoldRun is an augmented reality platform that places GPS-linked virtual objects in real-world locations, such as shopping areas, parks, and events.

The company launched last year and has since worked with Bloomingdale’s, HBO, Tommy Hilfiger, Spike TV, H&M, Airwalk, Young & Rubicam, Esquire, Barnes & Noble, Universal Pictures and A&E Network.

LivingSocial offers handpicked daily deals that consumers can share with friends. Members enjoy at least 50 percent off on the coolest, local experiences.

How it works
Participants in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle can download the GoldRun application to their iPhone, and iPad 2 devices and then select their city’s LivingSocial “Run.”

Via the campaign teams of up to six players will be sent to iconic locations selected by LivingSocial Adventures.

Participating users can follow clues via the app to find each location.

When users arrive at the location, they can snap photos with uniquely themed augmented reality objects.

Participants who complete the hunt will rub elbows with their competitors at an exclusive after-party where prizes will be awarded to those who solve puzzles and complete the hunts the fastest, per LivingSocial.

Los Angeles users can participate on Aug 14, 21 and 28.

San Francisco users can compete on Aug. 20, 21 and 27.

Seattle users can take part in the competition on Aug. 13, 20 and 27.
