Indonesian media giant taps Alcatel-Lucent for mobile content sales

Entertainment and media company PT Solegra Nusa Perdana has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent to launch a mobile gaming and music download service.

Solegra plans to offer a digital storefront consisting of content from multiple major labels and local independent content creators to serve the more than 100 million mobile subscribers across Indonesia. The launch is a part of a larger trend and a sign that mobile content sales are ramping up worldwide.

“We’ve been selling our multimedia platform to operators around the world, but this is the first time we’ve branched out into the content aggregator space,” said Cassidy Shield, Chicago-based senior director of marketing for the interactive media and communications division at Alcatel-Lucent. “It’s important for us to not only support operators but content providers as well.

“This one is not just a content provider around operators but also with operators,” he said. “They went with us because not only can they model a business-to-consumer business, but a business-to-business model with the operators in Indonesia.

“Our platform is targeting the more complex supply chain of content providers needing the flexibility to handle the range of assets they want to deploy, from video, games and apps to ringtones and full-track music.”

Alcatel-Lucent helps service providers, enterprises and governments deliver voice, data and video communication services to consumers, specializing in fixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications and services.

The 5920 Multimedia Content Manager is a multiscreen content management platform that enables service providers to ingest, manage, repurpose, market and distribute all of their content to many different devices and downstream distribution systems from a single system.

Solegra is the first content aggregator customer to use Alcatel-Lucent’s Multimedia Content Manager platform to aggregate and distribute digital entertainment content.

Indonesians love mobile content
This project demonstrates Alcatel-Lucent’s business expansion into nontraditional, potentially high-growth customer segments as part of it strategic transformation.

Alcatel-Lucent is helping Solegra to aggregate, market and deliver virtually any sort of media or application to any device.

With this platform, Solegra plans to cross-sell and up-sell its mobile content and services.

The Multimedia Content Manager deployment for Solegra is an example of how Alcatel-Lucent’s application enablement tools can support application and content developers as they introduce new services and business models.

Alcatel- Lucent’s application enablement vision focuses on combining the capabilities of service provider networks with the Web.

As part of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will be providing Solegra with a complete set of services, from installation, commissioning and project management to software customization and integration.

“Solera has gone from wanting to be a music aggregator to wanting to start aggregating more than that because of the capabilities of the platform,” Mr. Shield said. “As content providers proliferate, the aggregation model will evolve and we give them the chance to manage their own virtual store based on what’s of interest to their customers.

“We match assets to any device in an automated way, and we give up control of the management of the platform to the label or aggregator,” he said. “We have the capability to offer discovery mechanism in a variety of different ways, and it’s a model we think we can replicate elsewhere.

“Discovery is going to be more and more important as services and content proliferate, and it’s important to have the flexibility to create a storefront on any type of device on any platform.”
