Expedia ramps up mobile repertoire with Android app, mcommerce site

The company believes that the new mobile offerings will help consumers find and book their trip whether they are at home, on the road or anywhere else. The Expedia Hotels Android app is available for free download in the Android Market.

“In keeping with our new Expedia everywhere business strategy, we have a heavy emphasis on mobile innovation,” said Adam Anderson, director of public relations at Expedia, Bellevue, WA.

“We want to be a constantly available to our customers when they are shopping for and booking travel,” he said. “This is why we have invested in our mobile website, and released an Android App and an iPhone app.

“You’ll see even more from us in mobile in the coming months.”

Expedia.com aims to provide the latest technology and the widest selection of vacation packages, flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises and in-destination activities, attractions and services.

Book me
According to the company, this is its first Android app that is introduced since Expedia acquired Mobiata.

The app uses the device’s GPS to find available hotels within close range of the traveler.

Additionally, the application lets users research and book hotels anywhere in the world, filtering by price, rating, distance or popularity.

The Android app includes an interactive map view that shows all hotels in a particular area with a variety of sorting options.

Consumers can browse hotel ratings and amenities.

In addition, just four taps are required for a traveler to move from research to purchase.

Once booked, travelers can tap for direction to the hotel and share their confirmation via email.

The Android version of Expedia Hotels also features all-new Android-specific landscape views for flexibility on a wide range of Android devices.

“The team is at Google I/O right now showing off the new Android app,” Mr. Anderson said. “We are putting the word out through our social media channels, and will feature the apps on expedia.com/apps.

“Of course, our apps are also promoted from the iTunes app store and the Android Marketplace,” he said.

Mobile enhancements
Expedia has also enhanced its Web browsing experience with features such as one-finger navigation.

The user interface has also changed.

Consumers can view images, guest ratings and expanded details for each property and room.

Additionally, the single tap to the hotel map guides travelers directly to their chosen hotel.

“We want to make it easy for our customers to book from our inventory of travel components, with real time best prices and availability, in just moments from nearly anywhere,” Mr. Anderson said.
