CNN, MTV encourage tune-in on New Year’s Eve with virtual mobile rewards

Whether they are spending the last moments of 2010 celebrating at a party, relaxing at home or freezing in New York’s Times Square, users of mobile social network GetGlue can earn limited-time stickers from CNN and MTV this New Year’s Eve.

CNN rings in 2011 with New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, while MTV’s New Year’s Bash counts down with Whitney Cummings and cast members from Jersey Shore. Whichever channel users pick, they can check-in with GetGlue and earn exclusive stickers from the cable networks.

“Both MTV and CNN are having live coverage of New Year’s Eve celebrations,” said Alex Iskold, founder/CEO of GetGlue, New York. “By offering GetGlue stickers for their fans, they are looking to provide additional incentives for tune-in.

“For MTV, the target demographic is a younger crowd,” he said. “For CNN, it is the network’s usual audience—really the same people who watch these channels.”

AdaptiveBlue’s GetGlue is a social network for entertainment with mobile applications for various platforms such as iPad, iPhone and Android. GetGlue users rate things they like and get recommendations based on personal tastes, friends’ favorites and what is most popular now with everyone.

The GetGlue applications connect friends and fans in real-time around their favorite entertainment, while watching a TV show, reading a new bestseller, listening to a favorite band, going to see a movie, playing a video game, drinking wine or discussing a topic such as sports, celebrities and news.

Hosted by comely comedian Ms. Cummings, MTV’s New Year’s Bash features two Jersey Shore favorites: Pauly D will use his DJ skills to provide the soundtrack for the party, while pint-sized Snooki will get a very intimate view of a ball drop—from inside the ball.

Starting at 10:30 p.m. ET, Cummings is joined by SNL’s Bobby Moynihan, and since this is MTV, the audience will be treated to tracks from hip-hop hitmaker Flo Rida.

During the event, revelers can put down their glasses for a moment to check-in through GetGlue’s applications or its site.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cooper and Ms. Griffin host CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, starting at 11 p.m. ET.

The duo has hosted the festivities from Times Square before, and CNN reunites them again this year for more late-night entertainment.

Check-in during the live event via GetGlue’s applications or its site to earn the special limited-time sticker.

Viewers can begin the countdown to 2011 by checking-in to New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin before New Year’s Eve to earn a special pre-show sticker.

Users can also get the party started early at 10 p.m. on Dec. 31 with Anderson Cooper 360’s “All the Best, All the Worst 2010,” starting at 10 p.m. ET.

With Tom Foreman as its host, the year-end special recaps the highs and lows of 2010.

“The biggest challenge that GetGlue address for media companies such as CNN and MTV is encouraging live tune-in,” Mr. Iskold said. “By offering rewards that are available only during live viewing, MTV and CNN are able to provide additional reasons for people to tune-in live.”
