Chase positions mobile check deposit as customer service differentiator

chase-1Chase is letting customers deposit checks remotely by using the bank’s iPhone application in a play to differentiate itself from competitors.

The Chase QuickDeposit application lets users who are enrolled in Chase Online, pay bills and credit cards via their handset using their camera phone. The application is customized for iPhone and iPod touch users.

“Our goal is to provide an ever-broader menu of choices for our customers to bank with us,” said Tom Kelly, spokesman for Chase, New York. “The iPhone QuickDeposit is the latest item on that menu. 

“We know that iPhone users like to have apps on their phones to handle their everyday needs,” he said. “Banking and depositing checks is an everyday need.”

Chase operates more than 5,100 branches and 15,000 ATMs.
Mobile deposits
Using the application, customers can snap a picture of the front and back of their endorsed check and hit send.

After depositing the check, the customer gets a confirmation that the images it sent have been successfully uploaded.

Additionally, users can access the application to transfer money between Chase accounts, see account balances and transaction history, and send wire transfers.

Chase customers can also search nearby Chase branches, ATMs and the bank’s contact information.

“Customers will be able to see [that their check deposited securely] because it will be in their deposit account immediately,” Mr. Kelly said. “You can submit as many deposits as you need to each day, up to $1,000 per account – there is a $3,000 monthly limit per account for deposits made with QuickDeposit.

“We extended this service to the iPhone because there are millions of iPhone users and many of them would like to use their iPhone to do their banking,” he said. “We would like to serve Chase customers and to win over some customers that aren’t yet Chase customers.”

Bank services
In May, Chase revamped its mobile banking service that lets customers manage their accounts and avoid fees.

Chase customers can opt-in to receive a text message the moment their checking account balance falls below a pre-selected amount and then directly transfer funds by sending a reply (see story).

According to Mr. Kelly, Chase is looking at extending the QuickDeposit application to other platforms such as Android and Palm Pre.

“We will continue to develop products to serve our customers even better, and we will roll them out as they are available,” Mr. Kelly said.
