American Express targets Uber users with new Platinum benefits

American Express is looking to modernize credit card experiences and rewards with new Platinum Card benefits that will see excessive Uber-related bonuses to help usher in millennials.

Platinum Card members will be receiving up to $200 in annual Uber credits for rides that they can redeem within the ride-sharing application. Along with the Uber integration, Amex is looking to add a lounge-finder feature within its app to find its lounges at airports.

Millennials as members
Amex is beefing up its benefits for Platinum Card members, likely to grab the attention of millennials who have now reached the stage where they are large portion of the credit card demographic.

Uber users that hook up their Amex Platinum Cards will now be able to receive a wide range of points for free Uber rides. The financial institution is claiming it will give out up to $200 a year for consumers in the United States.

Uber also has local offers

Eligible customers will receive $15 a month for using their cards in the ride-sharing app. During December, there will be a $20 bonus.

Amex’s mobile app will have new added benefits that users can take advantage of such as five times membership rewards, hotel rewards and event invites. The Platinum Card itself is receiving a makeover with a new design.

Those who already have their Platinum Cards as a payment method on the Uber app will automatically start receiving rewards at the end of March. Those that do not only need to add the card as a payment method, and will also automatically receive Uber rewards.

The Uber for Amex platform

Uber will also likely gain more customers, as the partnership encourages Amex Platinum Card members to download Uber.

Amex history
Airbnb similarly targeted business travelers through a partnership with American Express that integrates the mobile booking service into the financial institution’s suite of products under its corporate travel management service.

Members of American Express Global Business Travel are able to book places to stay with Airbnb Business, without having to go to another mobile platform or app. The partnership allowed businesses to include Airbnb stays within its expense tracking system, making it easier to allow more companies to book travel on the platform (see more).

Amex also recently brought in some new functionality to its Facebook Messenger chatbot, further cementing messaging as an invaluable tool for brands and marketers to connect with their consumers.

The brand added a new “add a card” feature to its chatbot, letting consumers quickly add credit card information without opening the app. The move is an attempt by Amex to capitalize on the new popularity of messaging platforms (see more).
