Amazon expands Kindle iPhone app to Britain

Amazon.com Inc. has expanded the availability of its Kindle application for iPhone and iPod touch to more than 60 additional countries, including Britain.

The Kindle for iPhone application features Amazon’s Whispersync technology that saves and synchronizes a customer’s bookmarks across their Kindle devices and Kindle cross-platform applications, which include Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch and Kindle for PC. In the coming months, Amazon will roll out Kindle for Mac and Kindle for Blackberry.

“This app enables Kindle owners to access their Kindle books even when they don’t happen to have their Kindles with them,” said Cinthia Portugal, spokeswoman for Amazon.com, Seattle. “It also provides iPhone and iPod touch users who don’t have Kindle, for the first time, the ability to purchase Kindle content and read books from our massive selection of over 390,000 Kindle books.”

Amazon.com Inc., a Fortune 500 company, offers millions of new, refurbished and used items in categories such as Books, Movies, Music, Games, Digital Downloads, Electronics & Computers, Home & Garden, Toys, Kids & Baby, Grocery, Apparel, Shoes & Jewelry. Health & Beauty, Sports & Outdoors, Tools and Auto & Industrial.

Kindle is a portable reader device that wirelessly downloads books, magazines, newspapers and personal documents to a high-resolution six-inch electronic ink display. Kindle uses the same 3G wireless technology as smartphones.

Kindle the mobile flame
Kindle customers can read a few pages on their Kindle, then a few more pages on their Kindle-compatible device such as an iPhone and never lose their place.

With Kindle for iPhone, customers in 60-plus countries can buy, download and read hundreds of thousands of books available in the Kindle Store.

The iPhone application lets consumers read the beginning of books for free before they buy, as well as add and automatically synchronize bookmarks and last-page read.

Users can access their library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers for free.

Application users can choose from six different font sizes and adjust words per line, as well as add and view notes and highlights marked on Kindle and Kindle DX.

The applications lets consumers read books in full color, including children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, textbooks and graphic novels.

The Kindle App is available for free from the App Store at http://www.itunes.com/appstore.

Amazon.com was tight-lipped when asked about the vendors they partner with, plans to roll out the application to other smartphone platforms and marketing tactics.

“We do not disclose the specifics about the vendors we may or may not work with,” Ms. Portugal. “We are actively working on making Kindle books available on a wide range of devices, but we are not disclosing specifics at this time.

“We don’t discuss future plans or developments we may or may not have,” she said.
